Peripheral Lymphocyte Counts in Colorectal Cancer

Abstract
There have been several reports on the significance of peripheral lymphocyte counts in malignant lesions of various types. Lymphocytopenia has been reported in malignant tumors of various types located lymphoid tissue, G-I tract, breast, lung and other areas.
We have studied 37 cases of colorectal cancer from January 1978 to July 1980 at the Department of Surgery, Medical School, Chonnam University.
The results were as follows
1. There was a close relationship between advancing stage of the cancer and lower level of peripheral lymphocyte counts, where as no significance between the location of tumor, sex and peripheral lymphocyte counts.
2. An inverse relationship between carcinoembryonic antigen levels and lymphocyte counts was noted in stage B and C of colorectal cancer.
From the above, it was suggested that the combination of both lymphocyte counts and carcinoembryonic antigen determination might be helpful as a prognostic indicator of colorectal cancer.
